Arriving Home From Home

Texas was so lovely. Mesquites gently jostling their frond-like leaves of light green seem innocent at first sight, unique, but hide the spear-point thorns the rancher mostly hates. My Break in Texas

It’s the close of Easter week where I’m just finishing up an Easter break from the UK to spend time with family in my second-home state of Texas. It’s been a good week seeing the tornadic storms come in and then dissipate over 24 hours. I’d been missing the hard rains and the ditches filled…

The Hand Made V Mass Made

Passing around Texas this week I ended up sitting in the ever-famed Cracker Barrel rocker. Cracker Barrel is a Southwest style restaurant with a sales area selling everything associated with southern living. I first saw these rockers when they were selling for $99 back in the late 80s. They’ve been a consistent seller and though…

Changing the Image of Progress

It’s not too complicated. You can see where things took hold – when we began losing our hand skills. Well, it’s not so much that we lost them, or lost them forever, more that the potential for developing such skills took a nose dive for a century or so, so the potential for owning skills […]

Developing Designs for the House

Give me an empty space, a blank sheet of paper, a pencil and such and before a few minutes have passed lines seem to appear from nowhere. When I go into a home, an office a business I am ‘space aware’ and as we all know, ‘nature abhors a vacuum‘. Of course there is no […]

He Rolls Up His Sleeves

He reaches across the workbench for a plane and says, ‘Let’s get crackin’ then.” His plane’s a Woden. Well used, well worn, well ‘broken in’. Mine’s new, narrow, a #4 Stanley. He’d loaned me his when I first started under him but then I saved up and bought my own. Mum told me, “Don’t pay […]

Grass Needs Mowing

It’s a long and narrow garden. Straight lines, squared off. No imagination, easy maintenance. I really like gardens with secret corners and surprises to draw your interest. Media Credenza, Now with More Crotch!

I have been on the hunt for a Media Credenza design for over a year now and nothing really tickled my fancy. That is until I came across a cabinet in Mike Pekovich’s IG feed that he made with a student, Sean Montague. Turns out, the cabinet was inspired by the work of Philip Morley. So in a somewhat convoluted way, all three of these gentlemen had a role in influencing the design of this Media Credenza.

The project features book-matched crotch grain raised panel doors that slide smoothly in shallow grooves. Each compartment has holes and slots for wires and ventilation. While I made the project from 5/4 walnut and the plans reflect that, you should know that standard 4/4 material would suffice. I hope you enjoy.

If you’re interested in my new book, Essential Joinery, you can buy an autographed copy from me directly here or on Amazon.

Mortise Guides at the Ready

We often use guides in my actual work and then, or especially, in my teaching others. In the past it was simple enough to get my students to cut their tenons to the parallel guide lines because, after all, they are so clearly visible, but guaranteeing the inside walls of mortise holes to correspond with […]
