I Read a Review

I did! It was a review on some chisels a person bought. The commenter said it took her or him four hours to flatten the back of a chisel on a diamond sharpening plate. I thought to myself, ‘Is that really true or even possible? Can fine-grained, chrome manganese steel hardened to 59HRC be so…

Dovetail Tester

There is no substitute for practice before and in the process of actually cutting dovetails. Occasionally someone gets it straight off but mostly not. The exercises early on improve your chances of success and aiming for the bullseye of a good result is definitely a question of ‘getting your eye in’ before the real work…

It’s a Wrap

I have a few of these Stanley 78s and surprisingly the handles all seem to me to feel different. in my hands. I have a couple that have very smooth castings and so too the painted finish. Some however feel quite rough and somehow cold to my touch in that they seem uninviting to work…

Philip Morley Shop Tour

This Summer I traveled to Wimberley, Texas to film at Philip Morley’s shop. The goal was the capture the creation of the Morley Kitchen Table for the Wood Whisperer Guild. You can still get this project at the Pre-Order discount price until it launches in November. While I was there, I asked Philip to give us a little shop tour while also showing off the super handy Morley Mortiser. If you’re interested in building one you can purchase the plans here. If you’d rather buy a CNC-cut kit, you can do that here.

Thanks to Philip and his family for letting me invade their space for a week.

Sharpen a Saw in 5 Mins???

I was teaching saw sharpening when almost everyone I ever met or knew of had abandoned such practices. As a direct result from my efforts more people are sharpening their own saws than I have ever seen before and the numbers keep on growing. Who’s doing it? Amateur woodworkers all around the world are! I…

It’s Gone Bad…

Three decades ago we used to pick up a four-in-hand rasp at any hardware store in the US knowing it would be good to go and at an economical price. They weren’t fancy, just functional. The farriers used them to trim and shape the hooves on horses during and after shoeing them. Not a fine…

A Fancy Breadbox

The bread box is making a comeback! I don’t know if that’s true, but I just wrote it on the internet so it must be! With the resurgence of fresh-baked wholesome bread, it only stands to reason that we need to bring the bread box back! My wife Nicole is a big fan of bread boxes and we’ve had a metal one that has served us well for years, but she has always wanted something more elegant made from wood. I looked at a bunch of designs and none of them had the look I was hoping to achieve, so I set out to build something with a sleek and smooth appearance made from figured wood with a copper punch panel accent.

This project is available in the Wood Whisperer Guild so if you’re interested in the plans and full set of videos, head on over.

Special thanks to our sponsors Powermatic, Titebond, and Brusso Hardware.

Repurposed Outdoor Coffee Table

In 2013 I built a table for my backyard in Arizona. Watch the build here. After moving to Denver, I decided to refinish the table in hopes of giving it a “bulletproof coating” that could take anything this high elevation environment could dish out. Watch the refinish video here. Unfortunately, the finish didn’t hold up as well as I had hoped and I decided to dismantle the table and repurpose the material for a coffee table.

To ensure this table doesn’t suffer the same fate as the previous one, I made three important changes:

  • I included slats in the top to allow for drainage.
  • I used a hardwax oil finish (Osmo One Coat) containing pigments and no film. The pigments will help block UV rays and the finish won’t crack or peel.
  • The table will live under a covered area of the patio. This greatly reduces exposure to UV, rain, and snow.

Hopefully, this table will last a lot longer with yearly maintenance. If necessary, I plan to lightly sand the table and then reapply a new coat of the same finish.

There are no plans for this project since I pretty much designed on the fly with the material I had on-hand.

Sunrising Starts

It’s not really that early but I leave home at around 6.30. With the front door gone but boarded up I’m using the back conservatory door and it is just about coming light when my hand hits the latch. With the mix of rain and showers I take advantage of every opportunity to kick start…

Handing Over Work

The front living room is now gutted and skim-plastered over. I hadn’t expected that but removing picture rails and fireplaces leaves holes to be patched and then surface cracks in the existing plaster means filler and such; it was more efficient and more work effective in getting the pristine, clean and fresh beginning we wanted…
