Closing the Year With Thanks!

Twas the eve before Christmas, a carpenter put down his tools, swept the shop floor, and placed the tools away for a few days’ rest. His hands, aching more than usual, and his body, seemed more wearied than usual. The loneness of finish, finalising things, no one else can do, rests on his shoulders. Questions...

Last Public Project of 2022 . . .

Signs of the Two planes

I bought two planes last week. One was brand new, the second was secondhand from eBay. The new one came boxed and wrapped in waxed paper while the secondhand one arrived well wrapped in recyclable second- or third-time used box with crumpled newspaper print. Unpacking the new Stanley came from me thinking I should not …

Relating To Your Wood

For the general carpenter working in construction, he will generally be working with softwoods like pine and fir, spruce and such. Trim moulding modular homes mass made in factories …

When I had hoards of school children come to visit me in my workshop, 7-10 year-olds, several days a week, I developed many ways to show how tools worked on wood to true and trim, smooth and shape. We counted saw strokes together and felt the wood fibres before and after planing and sawing. If …

The steeper the bevel is on a plane or chisel the more resilient the cutting edge will be but depending on how you use the blade will affect how it feels in the wood. Bevel down and with the blade elevated as in a bevel-down plane will make no difference. Bevel up, as in bevel-up …

Did I Screw Up?! | Carbon Method Update

A few months ago I decided to take rust prevention a little more seriously since I was gearing up for a move to a humid climate. The product I applied was Carbon Coat from Carbon Method and it’s a thin protective graphene coating that is supposed to do a great job of preventing rust. Here’s a link to that video if you want to catch up: We Moved!

In that video I promised to report back on the condition of my table saw after the move. Unfortunately, the results were not as clear-cut as I expected. I had to do some additional research and experimentation in order to provide you guys with an honest and informative update.  So here we are.

Did I Screw Up?!

When I brought my saw into the shop in August, I immediately noticed a bunch of tiny rust spots all over the table stop. I couldn’t help but ask myself if I had screwed up, on multiple fronts. Did I apply the product incorrectly? Did the product fail to work? Did I put my foot in my mouth by agreeing to report back on this new product? The only way to get to the bottom of this was to contact the company and do some additional research and experiments of my own.

Spoiler Alert

Be sure to watch the video for the full explanation, but let me sum up here. Depending on the water source, standing water may still cause rust to form on a cast iron surface that has been coated with Carbon Coat. My testing, however, showed Carbon Coat to be the most effective at protecting metal from ambient humidity when compared to wax and Boeshield T9. So you can bet I’ll be using this product on all of my cast iron surfaces as a form of rust prevention.

To learn more about Carbon Coat and the other products made by Carbon Method, go here.

If you want to get the pre-order special price on Caleb James’ Danish Cord Bench project: go here.

Heirloom Beam Compass | Way out of my comfort zone!

I occasionally need to draw arcs and large circles that exceed the capacity of my Accuscribe scribing tool (https://amzn.to/3SQfJjM). It’s pretty trivial to create a makeshift beam compass using shop scraps and a pencil but I thought it would be fun to go all out and make an heirloom-quality beam compass from walnut and aluminum.

I don’t work with metal all that often so this was a bit outside of my comfort zone, but it was fun nonetheless.

Shop Tours | “Small” Edition

Woodworkers love shop tours! Even if the person’s shop is nothing like yours, there’s almost always a slick storage or organization idea you can borrow and apply to your own creative space. And for many woodworkers, the shop itself is a lifelong project that’s always evolving and improving in hopes of better efficiency.

Today we’re taking a look at three shops that I’m classifying as “small.” See how Kris, Ben, and Eric organize their shops for the most efficiency possible and without breaking the bank.

Modifying a Builtin – I Did it for the Kids!

When we moved into our new house, one of the first things I noticed was the built-in in the family room. Older built-ins were often constructed as entertainment centers for CRT televisions which were very heavy and usually topped out at about 36″. These days, TVs are so cheap and so big that they tend to look odd (to my eye) sitting in an entertainment center that was built for the TVs of the previous generation. That was the case in our new house so I decided to do something about it. A fairly simple modification to the partitions and shelves would open up the space and allow me to fill it with some delectable 4K goodness. The project was a little more involved than I originally expected and the situation was complicated by the fact that all of my tools are still packed away, but I was able to get to the finish line in one day. And while you might think this is something I did for my own selfish reasons, I actually did it for my kids. ;)

My workbench is a dead simple workbench to make. I designed it in the face of the massive behemoths woodworkers in lofty realms seem ever-wont to …

Tool Ergonomics . . . Don’t settle for Less

I bought my first square, a combination square, in 1965, 90 or so years after Laroy S Starrett invented the tool for engineering machinists. My combination square was made by Rabone Chesterman here in England. I still have it, use it daily, and it is still fully working and accurate despite its daily use of …

The Best Food Safe Finish | Spoiler: It’s Not Mineral Oil

Think you know the best food safe finish? Think again! I tested a few of the most common food safe finishes and you might be surprised at the results. While mineral is the classic go-to food safe finish, I think it’s time we crown a new food safe king, and that’s Tung Oil.

Stuff used in the video:

Don’t feel like mixing your own Tung Oil/Citrus Solvent mixture? Try Half & Half from Real Milk Paint Company.

We Moved, It’s Humid, and a Game Changer for Rust Prevention?!

The move from Denver to Missouri happened, but not the way I had planned. Thankfully Mom was there to back me up and everything eventually made it to our new home in Missouri. My tools are stuffed in a detached garage and the commercial shop space is still in process. I’ll keep you posted as that situation develops.

Since I’m moving from one of the driest cities in the country to one of the more humid cities, I needed to finally take rust prevention seriously. I came across a cool product called Carbon Method and I’m hoping this will be a game-changer for rust prevention. It works by coating the surface with a single layer of graphite, providing a slick surface that’s protected from rush for months at a time. Does it work as well as they say? Let’s find out together! Check them out at CarbonMethod.com. To reiterate what I said in the video, I purchased this product with my own money. After talking with the owner, we decided to run an ad together with the caveat being I’d report back in a few months after my tools were exposed to high humidity.

A Sampler for Simple Making

Making small and simple woodworking projects can sometimes take as much time to make as something big. In my workshop, the designs are never designed and thereby governed by whether it can be geared up for being made using machines, handheld or freestanding, both, I never think in those realms anymore although at one time, …

BedRock or Bailey-Pattern throat openings

My task in reviewing issues woodworking is mostly met very favourably. There is more to my reviewing things than simply looking at things critically, that’s less than helpful, searching through texts for truth though often reveals the attitudes of makers as much by what they miss out as what they say. I think it’s true …

Marking Gauges

I’ve written about marking gauges from time to time. It’s a general term, marking gauge, and includes the various mortise gauges, combination gauges and the marking gauge singular with its lone pin. Through the years the single pin has generally been called the marking gauge and twin-pinned gauges with one fixed pin and the other …

Tool Sharpness. . .

. . . depends on your regularity. It’s often a regularity that woodworkers most generally neglect. In fact, tool sharpness reflects who you are. As an apprentice, George said sharply across the bench, “Sharpen up and don’t be lazy!” As an adult, such things are unsaid to you. Or are they? Does not a still …

I remember

I remember Mr Cheapy arriving in his blue minivan, and I mean the true Mini minivan–two seats in the front, touching both door windows with your shoulders, and the meter behind being a flat-floored, tin-sided van with no frills, padding or anything else. It was always loaded with tools, many seconds quality with minor defects …

Garage upgrade ‘N’ More

In my other real garage workshop, the one at Sellers’ home, I found myself fighting several issues surrounding systemic dampness permeating everything from the single-skin brick walls to concrete floors with no damp proof membrane, a bad drainage system that simply stopped at ground level and the internal level of the garage floor being at …

Another shaving From George

“Boy!” Jack Collins shouted from his bench at the far end of the shop. I sprang to a run from a gentle saunter and George’s, “Woohoo!” encouraged me to ‘Go quick‘. “Clean up!” His arm’s wide sweep meant the whole shop needed the shavings swept up, bagged and then burned. I was glad it was …

Hand Tools Used

Below are the only tools I used for making the furniture pieces for Sellers’ Home. I am putting this list in one place with some minor explanations for everyone to consider how my work continues to reach and influence woodworkers around the world. The important thing for me has been to show how an ordinary …

Walnut Records

Walnut I looked after I planed. Glimpsed first. Stopped. Looked again as if looking back at what caught my eye, stopped me in my tracks. And lifted the wood closer to look inside the pores I’d just opened with my plane’s last stroke to where no man had ever seen before, been before and I …

Of George I write

His hands were as big as he was tall “Plates of meat!” the other men called ‘em.  They swallowed the plane handle inside those mits and I defied any grain or knot to answer back when he swiped it along the length and breadth of an ugly board of wood beit oak, walnut, cherry or …

Over the years I have seen how rehandling existing handles can markedly improve the efficiency and energy of hand tools and customising them reduces the energy it takes to use them.
