Seeing the Art in Hand Planing—Part III

I hear how others express this or that about the using of hand planes. It’s as if there is but one way to hold the plane, one height at which to plane, one angle at which to plane, and so on and so forth. I’m sure there are as many ways to hold a plane […]

Seeing the Art in Hand Planing—Part II

It’s a funny thing, and I have done it myself, when people swipe off shavings to prove a plane works. Most of it is quite unreal as no one really just swipes of shavings one after the other from one end of a board to the other and equally across the width of a 12″ […]

Seeing the Art in Hand Planing—Part I

As an enthusiast for hand plane work I do feel something of an exclusivist in that it seems the only alternative for much of the work is to crank up power planers and belt sanders, random orbit sanders and such. This then means chip extraction, dust syphoning to pull away the ever harmful excesses for […]

Sketching Makes Me look More..

…and Then I Understand More It’s true. I allowed myself ten minutes per sketch and then it was pen down. Sketching is my way of looking without spectating. I want to see the twists, flexes and locks that take place to the hand and whereas you can see that with a photo, often photos are […]

Festool CT Cyclone Review

Festool recently launched their new CT Cyclone. My first reaction was one of curiosity since most cyclone separators are fairly bulky with a large conical shape. Festool’s offering is very “Festool” and looks to a Rubbermaid tote sandwiched between two Systainers. I use multiple CT Vacs in my shop and it would be great to have something that’s fairly compact, attaches directly to the CT vac, and gives me the option of putting additional Systainers on top of the stack. Unfortunately, after hooking the CT Cyclone to my vac, I immediately notices a loss in suction. This prompted further investigation. To spoil the ending, it’s not all bad news. If you typically use the small hose with your vac you’ll notice a typical amount of suction loss and it’s by no means a deal-breaker. But if you use the larger hose, like I do, you might be better served with one of the other cyclone separators that have already been on the market for years: such as the Oneida Dust Deputy or the ClearVue CV Mini. If you really need the Festool form-factor, take a look at Oneida’s Ultimate Dust Deputy.

Feel free to download this spreadsheet containing the test results.

Looking for the original Cyclone Separator Shootout? Click Here.

*Quick correction: I mention that the previous version of the ClearVue Mini was hampered by a short top. It was actually the conical portion of the unit that was shortened.

Quick High-Quality Shop Cabinets

It’s hard to believe I’ve been in my new Colorado shop for two years already! When I look at the condition of the garage when we moved and compare that to how it looks today, it’s pretty much unrecognizable. The original garage had lots of nice big/deep cabinets that were totally impractical for a small shop woodworker. Most of them were removed but the last thing to go was a small alcove  at the far end of the shop. I recently built a Miter Station and since I was already in cabinet-building mode, I decided to gut the alcove and start over with cabinets more suited to my needs.

The two cabinets will be made from 3/4″ Baltic Birch and will be notched to fit around a small concrete section of the wall. The cabinets are extra deep due to the depth of the alcove. The left cabinet will feature 8 drawers and two adjustable shelves. The right cabinet will have 8 pullout trays hidden behind two frame & panel doors. The space between the cabinets was originally designated for a garbage can, but I made a late-game decision to put my drill press there instead.

Plain Language Disclosure: I approached Rockler for partnership on this project. They were a perfect fit since they had the hinges and slides I wanted to use as well as the fact that I already owned several of Rockler’s jigs that make cabinet-building much easier. The slides, hinges, and Lock-Align components were provided by Rockler. The jigs were items I already owned. Rockler then paid a fee that funded the production of this video. As always, I don’t let anything into my shop that I don’t want there and I never partner with companies that I don’t believe in.

Drill Charging Station

Back in 2010 I built a Drill Charging Station to show off a new joinery gadget. It was really simple and didn’t quite have a feature set outside of being two shelves on the wall. So only eight short years later I finally decided to build a proper Drill Charging Station, made from Baltic Birch plywood featuring all the storage I need for 5 drills, two chargers, and all of my bits and accessories. Best of all, it only took about two hours to build. A perfect weekend project to improve the shop.
