My Own Scraper Burnisher

It’s been some time since I designed my own burnisher. Having used so many I thought I could develop one that was specifically designed for my own hand according to preferences and knowledge I had gained.I have used it every day since I turned the handle and slid the hardened steel into its place. Whereas…

My Week’s Working

In fact every week works for me, mostly. When problems come, then i can learn from them. Turning negative into positive is more than positive thinking, it’s more embracing opposition and turning it to an advantage. Of course that doesn’t mean that there aren’t struggles, just that when you marry your craft you know it’s…

The Bench in My Garden

I waited a while before giving the pine garden bench it’s protective layers. I wanted the wood to be thoroughly dried down so that the oil-based finish would have the least opposition from moisture forced out by the heat of summer. Now it has three coats so I expect it to last the next 15…

My Chair Came Out

When you have an idea, like my workbench in plywood, or my computer desk, something like that, there is something about the phasing of processes leading to completion that is more than uplifting, almost peremptory if you like. You cannot detach yourself from it even for a moment for fear of losing the plotted course…

Jory Brigham’s Hank Chair

I first became aware of Jory Brigham vid the Spike TV show Framework. He actually won the competition reality show and enjoys a life of building furniture and raising his family (and chickens) in Paso Robles, CA. We collaborated on the Hank Chair build for the Wood Whisperer Guild and I’m pleased to bring you this summary video so you can get an inside look into Jory’s process. Jory is mostly self-taught so I love seeing his creative solutions to furniture-making challenges.

Cherry Music Stand

As a piano technician I have a surplus of piano parts. Whenever possible I like to “re-purpose” them into my projects. In this music stand, the center scrollwork was from an old piano. The music stand is adjustable in height and can tilt for the proper angle.

Everett Media Console

This media console named after my son includes a waterfall edge, sliding bypass doors, push to open doweled drawers, a river of bubinga (is there any finer?) and more. I was inspired by the works of Jory Brigham and Greg Klassen. To build the waterfall edge I used floating mortise and tenon, aka the domino. I used stop dados to build the other aspects of the case. I routered 2 grooves for the sliding bypass doors. I did a coved design on the doors on the table saw. I routered in slots in the back for power cords and venting for electronics. I applied 3 coats of arm-r-seal to finish out the build. Thanks for looking.

Backlit LED Poster Frame Light Box

Nicole and I love movies and we are lucky to have our own home theater room. Just outside that room, is a recess with an outlet on the wall intended for a back-lit poster frame. The one that came with the house was made with fluorescent tubes and was falling apart. So this is my replacement. It features a dimmable LED light strip and a double sided poster (which gives the best results when backlit) and accepts 27″ x 40″ posters.

The Shinto Raspy Thingy!

Hall Tree Storage Bench

For full plans and the entire video series, check out the Wood Whisperer Guild.

With a family of four, it doesn’t take long for a laundry room or mudroom space to become out of control. Jackets, hats, shoes, and gloves are strewn about everywhere making it easy for our bulldog Duggee to find his next favorite chew toy. We were in desperate need of organization and a large Hall Tree Storage Bench was just the ticket. This project is made from plywood with solid frames (alder) and is painted and clear-coated for additional durability. The color and style was made to match the cabinetry already existing in the space.

Stuff featured in the video (these links are affiliate links and making purchases using these links helps support our business, which we really appreciate):
