You At The Bench

Experience tells me not to crave the past and what was, but to embrace the unknowns in an unknown future can sometimes be difficult. The future, for me at least, will always be the adventure I enjoy — the future to unknowns that seem all too often to defy predictions. In my world, changing the…

Thickness Tapers, Shelves, & Assembly | Nicole’s Desk Pt. 2

The desk has two shelves that span the distance between the front and rear legs and they are held in place with a dado. We’ll make that dado using a miter gauge and a dado stack at the table saw. From there we’ll thin the legs with a nice taper using a shop-made sled and the planer.

Assembly starts with a sub-assembly of the inner drawer compartment structure. Once that’s complete, we can attach the legs. You really need to be careful with this glueup and as you’ll see, even though I thought I was fully prepared, I still screwed something up. Glueups always keep you on your toes.

The shelves are going to be made from white oak and will serve as a nice complementary color and grain with the walnut. The white oak panels are carefully cut to size so they fit between the walnut legs when resting in the dadoes.

Two Things Worth Knowing

Working Accurately If you know anything of me by knowing me or reading my musings, watching the uniqueness of our videos and then through social media too, accuracy is one of my favourite words. Of course, accuracy isn’t so much mere spoken and written words, it is that too, but for makers and doers of…

Design, Legs, & Joinery | Nicole’s Desk Pt. 1

Nicole needed a new desk and her only requests were a large top, a shelf, and a drawer. Beyond that, I had complete creative freedom. When I set pencil to paper, I came up with a design that definitely shows some Mid-Century Modern influence, but is largely influenced by Star Trek. This wasn’t an intentional influence so much as something I realized after the design was complete. I’ve been binge-watching old episodes for the last year and the Roddenberry design aesthetic has apparently seeped into my brain.

The theme of this project is developed around the 56 degree angle of the legs. You’ll find that angle carried through to the apron and the drawer. This presented a number of challenges that were fun to tackle.

This is the first video of a 4-part series and it covers the following topics:

  • 0:00 – Design Influence
  • 1:31 – The Legs
  • 3:04 – Leg Tapers
  • 4:44 – Leg Miters
  • 6:53 – Design Change?
  • 8:17 – Apron and Drawer Parts
  • 10:27 – Bevel Cuts
  • 12:47 – Domino Joinery

DIY Kids School Desk – Quick, Easy, Inexpensive!

Are your kids doing remote learning this year thanks to COVID? If so, you could probably use a DIY Kids School Desk to help provide them with a more school-like environment. Will that help? Probably not, but we have to try something! The desks are made with just 1/4 sheet of 1/2″ plywood and a single 2×4. Quick, easy, and inexpensive!

I show you how to make two versions: a Basic model held together with glue and screws and a special Joinery version that makes use of half-laps and notches for a slicker aesthetic. Both versions are laid out in our free plans which you can download now.

Breakfast or Lunch Today!

I make no apology for this my friends. Lots of lonely people self-cooking and lots of diabetics needing lower carbs than others. I have cooked many a breakfast during the lockdown periods and this is I put together and so it is one of mine. I adjusted things to suit me because I mostly wanted…

Still Designing and Making

It’s often hard to see the future with certainty. We have all lived with and through attacks and threats of attacks reaching back through centuries and some indeed have lasted centuries long. The important thing to see is that we, as individuals and nations, have lived through them and come out the other side. Yes,…

Plane Knob Without a Lathe

This is one of my COVID-19 videos where I filmed ten full-length (rather long but still interesting) videos to encourage everyone to make with hand tools only. Really, it goes with the plane tote handle video I put up a couple of weeks ago as many people have no lathe, no turning tools, and no…

Slat-Back Platform Bed

The Story

My mom wants a Mid-Century Modern influenced Slat-Back Platform Bed. We’re super excited that she is moving to Denver soon. When she left AZ I told her to sell her furniture so that I could replace them with custom pieces. Well, now it’s time to make good on that promise and it all starts with a new Slat-Back Platform Bed. Mom really digs the Mid-Century Modern style so you’ll see that influence here. It’s a King size design and we have full plans and a series of nine videos available in the Guild. I’ll guide you through every step of the process. In addition, the Guild package also includes a separate PDF for a smaller Queen size version.

The Design

I played with a few different design concepts but ultimately ended up with something containing clean lines and a few surprising elements. The legs all feature tapers that lighten the look of the feet. The headboard is slanted back at a slight angle and the headboard slats are pillowed to soften their look. The platform is a simple half-lapped frame that sits on top of the base structure and the mattress is supported by wide slats that sit on the rails. Hidden from view is the center rail and the support blocks that allow the bed to be strong, yet have a very light appearance. The bed breaks down into separate parts. That includes the side rails, the headboard, the footboard, the platform frame, and the center rail. In addition, you might consider making the platform frame knock-down which should make transport easier.

This was a fun project but even in my 900 square foot shop I was a little pressed for space. If you decide to build one, you might consider whether or not you have the room to assemble the project and its various components. Furthermore, you might need a little help during the build when it comes time to move and assemble the parts.

Where My Wood Comes From

“Where do you get your wood from?” the man asked, as he wandered through the workshop, his eyes searching through the different colours for identity. My answer? “Well, anywhere and everywhere I can!” It was a truth I can now describe in a fullness many can’t. In some ways, I consider myself more an opportunist…

The Other Sofa Table

I seriously forget how much I enjoy building tables, so when a dear friend asked about a sofa table I jumped at the opportunity.

This project was about as simple as they get when it comes to tables. Four, double-tapered legs, with a straight apron and beveled top.

The most difficult part of the project was routing the bevel on the ends of the top, but with the help of a hand plane, that was adjusted in no time.
