If You blink. . .

. . . you might just miss it! I can’t even begin to tell you how many pieces Hannah makes in her workspace here at the shop. It always includes presents for friends and family, anything from turned bowls to carved dishes engraved with the names of bride and groom. Or it could be a …

In the Beginning . . .

. . . the summer heat beat down and the earth beat back up. August, September, where the sun beats down heavily with increasing power and from the weeks and months before the earth radiates relentlessly back long after the day’s end. Relief comes only beneath the live oak’s outspread umbrella and from floating the …

Modifying a Builtin – I Did it for the Kids!

When we moved into our new house, one of the first things I noticed was the built-in in the family room. Older built-ins were often constructed as entertainment centers for CRT televisions which were very heavy and usually topped out at about 36″. These days, TVs are so cheap and so big that they tend to look odd (to my eye) sitting in an entertainment center that was built for the TVs of the previous generation. That was the case in our new house so I decided to do something about it. A fairly simple modification to the partitions and shelves would open up the space and allow me to fill it with some delectable 4K goodness. The project was a little more involved than I originally expected and the situation was complicated by the fact that all of my tools are still packed away, but I was able to get to the finish line in one day. And while you might think this is something I did for my own selfish reasons, I actually did it for my kids. ;)

In Praise of Record QR Vises

I have a few different quick-release (QR) vises installed on workbenches here at the workshops. Eleven workbenches replete with 9″ wide vises opening to between 11-15″ in all. Through the years the old Record vises have all worked to a consistently high standard alongside my many Wodens and a really nice Paramo No51 on Hannah’s …

About Grain tearout

I have shared it before but this time I filmed it to show what to do when the grain rises against you no matter the wood. AT least give it a shot, set the plane fine, make sure you are sharp; it will not correct bad and lazy workmanship. Here is the link to watch …

Rounding the Squares

Elliptical Tables and More They might look the same but they’re not, not quite anyway. When I made the small tables for the living room of Sellers’ Home I experimented a little and made several shapes going from square to rectangular, octagonal and elliptical. At the experiment stage, developmental really, I left out the option …

The Littleton Console

This was one of my favorite projects of the year. It’s a small cabinet intended to go beneath a wall-mounted television in my mom’s house. Made from Sapele, Ambrosia Maple, and Ebony, it’s full of woodworking challenges and design elements. If you want the full course and plans, head to the Guild.

You think . . .

. . . it takes 57 years to perfect a dovetail. Of course, it doesn’t take anywhere near 1% of that. I sometimes post a video or a picture showing a perfect joint I just made, a dovetail, a mortise and tenon, or a saw sliding and gliding effortlessly through the wood in perfect alignment. …

Log Jams Happen

It happened in a flash The grain crunched, concertinaed into a cram-jammed throat so tight it jarred me. Would it happen with a heavyweight? Some other make? A bevel up? York-pitch-frogged version? Most likely one and maybe not the other but then no one predicts its happening in time to change plane type to avoid …

COVID Recovery

I contracted COVID sometime around 27 July 2022. From where I have no way of knowing. Over the previous week, I had travelled to Vienna and Saltzburg, eaten in restaurants and did the usual touristy things there as well as my usual inquiries into things wood culture and so on. For four days after my …

Workbench – Make it!

It does seem that those new to woodworking are a little intimidated by the thought of making the workbench they need yet they definitely need it to get started. My workbench is a dead simple workbench to make. I designed it in the face of the massive behemoths woodworkers in lofty realms seem ever-wont to …

Tool Ergonomics . . . Don’t settle for Less

I bought my first square, a combination square, in 1965, 90 or so years after Laroy S Starrett invented the tool for engineering machinists. My combination square was made by Rabone Chesterman here in England. I still have it, use it daily, and it is still fully working and accurate despite its daily use of …
