A Plain Bullnose

I have several bullnose planes. Too many. I’ve used and tested all of them. These low-angle bevel-ups stolid and unpretentious planes are the handiest little tenants on my shelves and in my tool chests. There is no equal for a variety planing tasks because when you need them there is no other plane or indeed […]

Making Another Bench…

… A Garden Bench I’m making a garden bench. So far it’s taken me a day to cut all the wood, plane it, cut the parts out, joint the 10 2″ deep mortise holes and cut and fit each of the tenons. I know! It’s pine, but making the joints should be easier in the […]

My Plywood Workbench

There are some things to explain:Is Paul just trying to be different? Is he bending to pressures? Bending the rules? Well, no, I’ve never really bent to pressure unless I found myself flat wrong and I don’t do things just to please others either. My mind never stops looking, searching what surrounds me, looking at […]

Stop Buying Double-Sided Tape!

Double-sided tape has been a constant woodworking companion of mine since the first time I attempted a flush-trimming operation. It wasn’t perfect, but it did the intended job of holding two pieces together. The stuff I used was sold as Turner’s Tape. My main issues were that it often left a sticky residue on the surface and that it would sometimes take wood fibers with it upon removal. Although the bond was tight, I sometimes found that the template would shift under pressure as the thick adhesive layers allowed for a little bit of creep.

A few years ago, I came across this video from Crimson Guitars.  It shows “an old luthier’s trick” using blue tape and CA glue to effectively attach templates with no residue. I initially scoffed at the idea because I was so stuck in the mind-set of using double sided tape. After trying it a few times, I became a big believer and I haven’t purchased double-sided tape since then.

The concept is simple. With a piece of blue tape on both pieces, we can put CA glue on top of the tape and bring the pieces together for a secure bond. The glue bonds to the two pieces of tape and the tape bonds to the wood. While it might not be as strong as double-sided tape, it’s strong enough for the intended application. I also found that this bond was more rigid than the one achieved with double-sided tape and I don’t get the creep I occasionally experienced in the past.

So give it a try. Most of us has everything we need for this already in the shop. Here are some links for the stuff shown in the video:

It may not seem like me: you might well be surprised, but my history with plywood dates back to my earliest recollection of woodworking with my dad in 1960. I know! Time passes when you’re having fun! That was 59 years ago! It was springtime when I sat on the kerb outside my house. Trucks […]

In-Drawer Knife Block

I checked my mom’s Amazon wish list before Christmas and noticed a nice little bamboo in-drawer knife block. I thought she’s probably appreciate something similar made by her own son so I headed to the shop to make one. It took about two days, but the end result is pretty nice and my mom absolutely loved it. What’s great about this design is you can modify the width to suit your drawer and/or knife collection. Just make the dovetail keys longer and add more ribs.

Please note that because I essentially made a copy of something I saw for sale, I will not be providing plans or templates.

Double Your Drawer Storage

Most drawers in the shop include a lot of wasted space. Even at only 6″ deep, most of my drawers are only at half capacity because nothing in there sits higher than 3″. Taking some inspiration from my kitchen, I decided to retro-fit an existing drawer with a sliding tray system. It requires a little bit of surgery on the drawer but in the end, doubling the capacity makes it totally worth the effort.

Choosing, Setting up and Using a Bandsaw

Choosing your bandsaw In times past, a decade or two before I apprenticed in the 1960s, the only bandsaws really available in the UK at any rate were those developed for industry. Gaming Coffee Table

This past Summer I had the honor of teaching a class at the Marc Adams School. The class was to be a scaled-down version of the Gaming Dining Table (Free Version) (Premium Guild Version). Because it’s never a good idea to teach a class on something you never actually built before, I decided to build the prototype and film the process. This video is just a quick overview of the process so if you want the additional details and the plans, you’ll have to pick up the Gaming Dining Table build at TheWoodWhispererGuild.com.

A special thanks to the folks who joined me in Indiana to build one of these fun little tables. Well, except for David. David just build whatever he wanted. (Sorry for the inside joke)

Stuff I Used

Gallery

Look close enough and you’ll see how “well-used” this table is. It’s the coffee table we keep in the family room so it gets plenty of abuse. I probably should have photographed it right after it was finished six months ago but hey, this is real woodworking life!
