Shedding the Past…

…or should it be shredding it? Last year was quite a hard year. Moving house to start the year with, moving offices and business to our own new premises, building the garage workshop studio and keeping up with the videography the whole time to make things as seamless as possible. There were moments when you […]

A Carding Wheel Arbor

I’ve been experimenting with rust bluing for a little while, but haven’t been able to achieve the results that I know are possible. After a decent amount of research I came to the conclusion that I was not removing the loose rust that forms during the bluing process properly, and that is why I was […]

Mike’s Garage Shop

My table saw, drill press, jointer, and bench top morticer are Powermatic. My bandsaw, orbital sander, and dust catcher are by Rikon. The smaller equipment such as 12” miter saw; 15 gallon compressor; and my various types of drills, both electric power and battery, are by DeWalt. My router equipment is a nice combination of both DeWalt and Porter Cable. The types of compressed air fasteners are all by Bosch and Passload.

My shop and all it’s equipment take up the 649 square feet of a small garage. It has taken me almost three years to make, and sometimes remake, cabinets and storage for all the equipment and tools necessary to do my work. I am a retired rough frame and trim carpenter. I am enjoying my retirement years doing what I like to do best with what I think is the best and still affordable equipment to do anything my mind is still able to conjure up.

George and I

It was 5.30 Friday evening when George and I finished the big ritual of sharpening all of our tools. Planes, saws, chisels and spokeshaves were lined up with bright shiny cutting edges ready for our return to work the next Tuesday morning. George was a happy man when all the tools were in order, I […]

Rest and Relax

I’ve had a few days off sick because of a cold that seemed more than a cold and more like bronchitis. It’s gone now. Yesterday I took a drive north and visited my home town, Stockport, stood on the spot where I was born. walked the field of my youth, drove roads of my paper […]

Whats My Worth—Part III

In modern times we might refer to our self-employment as freelancing. It sounds better and seems to settle the matter for those we’re telling the outcome of our recently completed degree years to. Of course in certain spheres large companies force you to become ‘independent contractors’ so as not to have to employ you directly. […]

What’s My Worth—Part II

There is work for which one charges a fair price and then there is work for which you can add a design fee. Don’t forget such things. A fair price would not be a good guide for me if I spent several weeks developing an idea to make a design come to reality that I […]

What’s My Worth—Part I

I received four books for review this week. They got bogged down in the post and should have arrived 6 weeks ago. Glancing at the covers of a couple I can see the content will not be for fine furniture as such but more, alternative pieces using wood that’s basically secondhand be that shaped, square, […]

Bunk Bed With Slide

My son has been asking for a bunk bed for a while. To be honest, I procrastinated due to the scale of the project and I am surprised Nicole didn’t just go out and buy one. Thankfully, she didn’t and this sweet bunk bed with slide is the result.

Built with a crap-ton of Alder from my local supplier Austin Hardwoods, the bed is big, heavy, and takes a while to build. But the smile on your kid’s face makes it work every second of effort.

Plans will be available soon.

Cot’s Coming Close to the End

Today I was fully in the saddle to almost close out the baby cot project I’ve been working on. It went particularly well and the end result will indeed be the sturdiest take apart, knock-down, almost flat pack cot in existence. The fasteners facilitate taking a large rectangle of frames and panels apart into five […]

2018 Holiday Gift Guide

We haven’t done an old school Gift Guide video in a while so we decided to do one live on our Friday Live show. Because the video was recorded live, it’s not quite as “hi res” as our usual content. But we thought you’d enjoy seeing some of these gift recommendations anyway. You probably know I’m a tech geek as well so some of these items are a little “off topic” but have some tie-in to life as a shop woodworker.

If you shop using any Amazon links below, we’ll get a small portion of the sale as Amazon affiliates.

Most of the products can be found in our Gift Guide directly on Amazon. Click here for the Holiday Gift Guide.
