John’s Meditation platform

A friend of mine is a daily meditator and unfortunately, his dedicated meditation space is right in front of an air vent. He needed a platform to raise him above the air vent and to give him a place to kick off his shoes. He sent me a photo of a tatami style bed for reference, and this is what we came up with.

The piece is done in cherry with General Finishes “High Performance” waterborne finish. I applied 3 coats with a brush, and it turned out well. This was a real test for me to a) duplicate a joint from the internet, and b) design on the fly. It measures a little under 4 feet square, and it took about 60 hours to complete.
